Dext vs Xero for a Pest Control Business: What Each Does

Published 22 September 2026 · Sources checked 22 September 2026

A one-to-two person pest control business already runs its books through Xero - invoicing customers, matching the bank feed, maybe running payroll if there’s a second pair of hands. So does adding Dext on top capture anything Xero doesn’t already do for free, or is it paying twice for the same job? What follows is checked directly against what Dext’s and Xero’s own UK sites say today, not assumed from a reseller’s comparison table.

What Xero already does with your receipts and bills

Xero’s built-in Smart Document Capture is included on every UK small business pricing plan at no extra cost [1]. Photograph a receipt with the Xero Accounting mobile app, email a bill to your Xero email address, or drag a file onto the web app, and Xero’s AI extracts the amount, date and other details in under 20 seconds [1]. It then cross-references what it’s found against your bank transactions and shows a suggested match for you to accept or reject, with built-in duplicate detection so the same document doesn’t create two records [1]. Nothing posts automatically - you double-check the captured details before Xero creates the financial record [1].

On top of that, direct bank feeds are included at no extra cost for most UK customers, though a small number of banks charge a fee for the feed that Xero passes on [2]. Whether transactions then reconcile themselves depends on which plan you’re on: auto-reconciliation, where Xero suggests or auto-matches bank lines to invoices and bills, is included as standard on the Grow, Comprehensive and Ultimate plans, and is a £3.50-a-month add-on on the cheapest Ignite plan [2].

What Dext actually adds on top

Dext is built and marketed as a layer that sits alongside your accounting software rather than replacing it - its own UK site describes integrating with more than 36 accounting platforms, including Xero, with “no migration, nothing to relearn” [3]. The core difference from Xero’s built-in capture is depth of extraction: Dext’s AI pulls out supplier details, individual expense line items and invoice due dates, claiming 99.9% accuracy, then categorises the expense and submits it toward your accounting software [3]. Documents themselves are kept on file for at least ten years, which Dext positions as support for audit requirements [3].

Feeding that into Xero specifically still isn’t automatic. Dext’s own Xero integration page describes a review step before anything reaches your books: once a document is uploaded and processed, you check the extracted data, edit anything that’s wrong, and click Publish to send it to Xero [4]. What does transfer alongside the document is your Xero chart of accounts, suppliers, customers, tracking categories, payment methods and tax rates, so a receipt can be coded and published without you also having to look up which nominal code or VAT rate applies [4].

Line-item extraction - breaking a receipt down into its individual products and their VAT, rather than just capturing one total - isn’t fully included in Dext’s base plan. The entry-level Business Core plan bundles five line-item-extraction documents a month for free, and anything beyond that is a paid add-on, priced from £16.50 a month or £0.40 per document [5].

What it costs for a one-to-two person business

ProductPlanPrice (ex VAT)What you get
Xero [2]Ignite£18/monthSmart Document Capture, bank feeds; auto-reconciliation costs extra
Xero [2]Grow£39/monthSame capture and feeds, auto-reconciliation included
Dext [5]Business Core£290/year (£24.17/month billed annually)5 users, 250 documents/month, 5 free line-item-extraction docs included

New UK customers get Xero’s base plan at 90% off for the first six months, reverting to the full price afterwards; the discount doesn’t extend to add-ons or usage-based fees [2]. Dext’s pricing page shows only the annual-billed monthly-equivalent figure for its Core plan - £24.17 a month, billed as £290 a year - alongside a note that annual billing is “up to 19% cheaper” than paying monthly, without showing the pay-monthly price itself [5].

Stacking the cheapest versions of both tools - Ignite plus Dext’s Core plan billed annually - comes to roughly £42 a month excluding VAT once the introductory Xero discount has ended [1][2][5]. That’s close to the £39 a month for Xero’s Grow plan on its own, which already includes free auto-reconciliation and the same built-in document capture every other Xero tier gets [1][2].

Which one if…

  • You’re comfortable reviewing and accepting Xero’s own suggested matches, and don’t need a VAT breakdown per line item on every receipt: Xero’s Smart Document Capture is already included on every plan, including the cheapest, at no extra cost [1].
  • You want line-item VAT detail as standard, or documents archived for at least ten years for audit purposes: Dext’s Core plan adds both from £24.17 a month billed annually, on top of whatever you’re already paying Xero [5][3].
  • Job volume is genuinely low for a one-to-two person round: Dext’s entry plan covers 5 users and 250 documents a month [5], well above what most solo or two-person operators are likely to generate, so the extra capability may go largely unused.
  • Budget is the deciding factor: moving up to Xero’s Grow plan for auto-reconciliation costs about the same as staying on Ignite and adding Dext on top [2][5], so it’s worth checking whether the gap you’re trying to close is capture depth (Dext) or reconciliation automation (already in Xero Grow) before paying for both.

What to do next

Neither vendor’s page can tell you how many receipts your own round actually generates in a month - that number is what decides whether Xero’s free built-in capture already covers it or Dext’s extra depth earns its keep. Loomwork Ai runs a short paid audit that checks your current invoicing and receipt workflow against both before you commit either way.

Not yet verified

  • The exact pay-monthly (non-annual, no commitment) price for Dext's Business Core plan, since Dext's UK pricing page shows only the annual-billed monthly-equivalent figure (£24.17/month) and a note that annual billing is 'up to 19% cheaper', without displaying a separate monthly rate
  • Whether Dext's duplicate-detection feature guarantees the same invoice can never be published twice to Xero, since this specific claim did not appear on the vendor pages fetched directly for this guide
  • Whether either vendor names pest control specifically as a supported trade or industry, since neither dext.com/uk nor xero.com/uk mentioned pest control by name on the pages checked
